The Rail Trail is open all year but much of the supporting infrastructure takes a break over winter. Summer has long sunny days, autumn brings golden colours and spring blossoms are stunning. We'll advise on layers and weather planning for your dates.

What weather should I expect?

Central Otago has extremes: hot summers, frosty autumns and strong summer sunshine. Bring layers, sunscreen, and a windproof jacket. We’ll give advice based on the season you’re riding.

The Otago Central Rail Trail is mostly open with little shade. Expect sun, wind, and wide skies. Carry water and sun protection, especially in summer.
