One of the first decisions you'll make when planning your Otago Central Rail Trail trip with Big Sky Bike Adventures is whether to ride a regular bike or an eBike. Both offer an incredible experience through Central Otago’s sweeping landscapes, but depending on your preferences, fitness level, and travel style, one might suit you better than the other.
Here’s a quick look at the pros and cons of choosing an eBike for your journey.
The Benefits of Going Electric
1. Less effort, more scenery
An eBike gives you a boost when pedalling, especially on inclines or at the day's end. While the Rail Trail is known for its gentle gradient (one in fifty, so the steam trains could make it!), there are still a few climbs where pedal assist can be a game-changer and let you enjoy the views, not focus on your legs.
2. Great for mixed-ability groups
eBikes help level the playing field. If you’re travelling with friends or family who ride at different speeds or fitness levels, eBikes can help everyone keep pace and enjoy the journey together.
3. Ride further, feel fresher
Planning to cover more ground each day or want time for off-trail side trips? An eBike helps conserve your energy, so you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready for a glass of local wine (or two).
4. Makes Cycling Accessible to More People
Whether you're a little older, recovering from injury, or just not a regular cyclist, eBikes make multi-day rides like the Rail Trail achievable, and enjoyable, for nearly everyone.
Things to consider before choosing an eBike
1. Slightly heavier
eBikes are heavier than standard bikes, which isn't usually a problem while riding, but can be noticeable if you're a first timer, or if your battery runs out....
2. Battery management
Our team will make sure your eBike is fully charged before you hit the trail, and we’ll show you exactly how to use it. But smart battery management is still important - riding sensibly, using the right assist level, and making sure you charge it each night are all part of the adventure. If you're someone who forgets to plug in your phone, consider this your friendly reminder: your eBike needs some love, too!
3. Slightly higher cost
Hiring an eBike does cost a little more than a standard bike. But for many riders, the comfort and ease it brings to the ride is well worth it.
4. Not for speedsters
eBikes are pedal-assist, not throttle-powered. You still need to pedal - yes, the bike doesn't work until you do - and some bikes are capped at a certain speed. So if you're thinking you’ll zoom through the trail like you're in the Tour de France... maybe not quite!
So... should you choose an eBike?
If you're keen to ride with ease, enjoy the journey without pushing yourself too hard, or are travelling in a group with varying fitness levels, an eBike is a fantastic choice.
