One of the joys of cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail is that it’s not just about the riding - it’s about the food, the wine, and the wonderfully warm country hospitality along the way. From hearty cheese rolls to Central Otago pinot noir, the Rail Trail offers a uniquely delicious journey that fuels both your appetite and your soul.

Cafés & hotels for lunch

After a morning on the trail, nothing beats rolling into a village and finding a welcoming café or country hotel for lunch. Many of the small cafes and taverns along the Rail Trail punch well above their weight when it comes to food. You’ll find everything from homemade pies and fresh-baked slices to excellent coffee and locally sourced seasonal fare. These little stops are often a highlight of the day - a chance to recharge, chat with fellow riders, and soak up the vibe.

Country pubs for dinner

Evenings on the Rail Trail are just as unforgettable. There’s something magical about stepping into a genuine country pub after a day of pedaling - and you’ll know it’s a

‘real’ pub by the line-up of local's gumboots by the door! In autumn the fire crackles; in summer, the beer garden buzzes with activity. Whether it’s a perfectly cooked steak, tender lamb shanks, or a plate of Stewart Island salmon, the meals are generous, hearty, and made with care. Pair it with a glass of Central Otago wine or a local craft beer, and you’ve got the ideal way to end the day.

Why dinner bookings matter

Here’s a little insider tip: in many of the smaller villages, there’s often just one hotel serving dinner. That means they can book out quickly - and after kilometres of riding, the last thing anyone wants is to find there’s no table left.

That’s where  Big Sky Bike Adventures steps in. We’re one of the only companies that makes dinner bookings for our riders, ensuring you’ll always have a seat at the table. No one goes hungry on our watch! It's a free service we offer our clients, and It’s part of how we take care of the details, so you can simply relax and enjoy.

A feast with a view

Food on the Rail Trail isn’t just about eating - it’s about the experience. Imagine sipping a glass of Central Otago wine on a sunny deck as the sun sinks behind the mountains, or enjoying a legendary cheese roll (yes, they really are that good!) beneath the shade of fruit trees in a charming café garden. It’s these little moments, combined with the region’s exceptional local produce, that turn a cycling holiday into something truly unforgettable.

So, when you ride the Otago Central Rail Trail, bring your appetite. The scenery is spectacular, but the food and drink along the way will leave just as lasting an impression.
